😱 Brazil🇧🇷: betting ban could contribute to Lula’s defeat in the election

This is what members of the campaign team are warning, based on an analysis of social media.

👉 The incumbent president’s campaign team drew attention to the activity of social media influencers calling on voters to support Flávio Bolsonaro in order to prevent a complete ban on gambling. On October 6, when betting activities are due to be deactivated and blocked under Lula’s decree, the situation could become even more complicated. For now, players who have deposits on the platforms can continue playing.

👉 Within Lula’s campaign team, a total betting ban was supported only by First Lady Janja da Silva, who believes the measure will receive support from women, and by Sidônio Palmeira, head of the Special Secretariat for Social Communication (SECOM). Other campaign members warned of the risk of public dissatisfaction, particularly within football circles: betting platforms sponsored clubs that face losing a significant share of their revenues.

👉 The stated goal of the ban was to reduce the debt burden on the poorest segments of the population, but experts warned that players would ultimately simply be pushed into the informal sector, where they would have no consumer protection. The ban has already affected the labor market: regulated betting generated approximately 15,000–20,000 jobs.

👉 Lula, according to his own statements, expected to win the election in the first round.

😬 Context: on September 26, a presidential decree completely banned gambling in Brazil. Betting activities and advertising were suspended; deposits held on the platforms must be withdrawn by 11:59 p.m. on October 5, after which the websites will be blocked. Operators that paid USD 5.8 million for their licenses will not receive compensation. Starting Tuesday, 10,435 websites and 3,040 social media pages, channels, and profiles are expected to be blocked, while platforms will be required to remove betting advertisements. From October 9 to 14, platforms will be required to return players’ deposits through banks, using individuals’ tax identification numbers.
