Brazil🇧🇷 and the EU🇪🇺 consider integrating Pix and TIPS
If everything goes according to plan, the connection between the payment systems could take place in 2028.
🟰 The European Central Bank (ECB) and the Central Bank of Brazil (BCB) are exploring the possibility of integrating Pix with TARGET Instant Payment Settlement (TIPS), the European platform for settling instant payments.
🟰 Background:
🔣 In June 2026, the ECB identified Pix as a proposed currency corridor for use within TIPS.
🔣 In early August, the Central Bank of Brazil said it was assessing potential connections between Pix and instant payment systems in other countries after signing information-sharing agreements vwith 65 foreign partners.
🔣 In late August, Pix launched the first stage of its connection with Singaporean🇸🇬 platform RoamQR and announced the start of its integration with Chinese🇨🇳 UnionPay.
🟰 Reaction: since its launch in 2020, Pix has gained significant ground in Brazil’s payments market, competing with bank cards, including international networks such as Mastercard and Visa. Its expansion has drawn criticism from U.S.🇺🇸 authorities and was subsequently linked to the imposition of 25% tariffs on certain Brazilian goods.
🟰 Context: in 2025, the number of Pix transactions increased by 25.7% year over year, reaching nearly 80 billion transactions, while total transaction volume exceeded USD 6.87 trillion.
