💥 Bolivia🇧🇴: USDT could become part of the national payment system, circulating alongside the U.S. dollar and the boliviano

The Minister of Economy and Public Finance of Bolivia stated that USDT could become a means of payment within the national financial system, circulating alongside the boliviano and the U.S. dollar. To achieve this, he said it will be necessary to develop a specific regulatory framework, aligned with the recommendations of the FATF (GAFI) on anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing.

➡️ The ban on cryptocurrency use was lifted in June 2024, and by 2025 the annual transaction volume had reached USD 430 million.

➡️ On April 29, 2026, the state-owned Banco Unión announced the addition of USDT to its Yasta digital wallet. It was not the only institution to do so: during the same month, FIE Bank introduced the "Crypto Account", allowing customers to buy and sell USDT through its mobile application.

➡️ Context: citizens are increasingly using USDT in everyday transactions as a response to limited access to U.S. dollar cash, an issue the country has faced for several years.

➡️ Although Bolivia remains on the FATF grey list, the authorities are seeking to accelerate regulatory reforms to comply with international standards while continuing to develop a national ecosystem for digital assets.
