👀 Azerbaijan🇦🇿: three more gambling organizers were detained
Cybercrime authorities continue to step up enforcement against illegal gambling. As part of an operation targeting online casinos, three people were detained, and material evidence was seized.
💬 Magherram Guliyev, Syanan Farziev and Hikmet Gasanov rented an apartment in Baku and established a gambling operation there with access to the Xbet and MostBet platforms and the Vimpay payment service. Bank cards, mobile phones, equipment and a significant amount of cash were found at the apartment. Police state that the suspects also organized a scheme to legalize the funds obtained, although the amounts have not been disclosed. A criminal case was initiated following the operation.
💬 This is far from the first successful operation by Azerbaijani law enforcement authorities, which have intensified measures against gambling. Less than a month ago, a betting network was dismantled on the same Xbet and MostBet platforms, with transaction volumes exceeding USD 5 million, while in June a similar scheme was uncovered, although on a smaller scale. In both cases, players were recruited through Telegram channels.
💠 Context: gambling is prohibited by law in Azerbaijan, except for state lotteries. In 2021, telecommunications operators were required to block access to gambling platforms. Organizing illegal gambling may result in criminal liability, including a fine equal to twice the amount of illegal income, while repeat offenses may carry a sentence of up to 4 years in prison. Players may also face administrative liability: Article 402 of the Code of Administrative Offenses provides for a fine of up to USD 1,700 for participating in illegal gambling.
