🪗 Argentina🇦🇷: Buenos Aires Province proposes new restrictions on online gambling platforms
Authorities in Buenos Aires Province have introduced a bill that would impose a broad set of new restrictions on online gambling. The proposal includes biometric authentication, session time limits, and mandatory responsible gambling warnings.
🎯 Who would be affected?
The measures would apply to the seven operators licensed by the Provincial Institute of Lotteries and Casinos (IPLyC): Bet365, Betano, Stake, Betsson, BetWarrior, Bplay, and Sports.bet.
🎯 Key proposed measures
🔨 60-minute session limit. Once the limit is reached, the gaming session would automatically end, and the account would remain blocked for one hour before the user can access the platform again.
🔨 Maximum of three gaming sessions per day. If a user attempts to start a fourth session on the same day, access would be restricted and a responsible gambling warning would be displayed.
🔨 Continuous on-screen information. Throughout the session, users would see the elapsed playing time and the total amount wagered. If the system detects potentially risky behavior patterns, it could interrupt the session before the established limit and display a preventive warning.
🔨 Real-time biometric authentication would become mandatory.
🎯 Enforcement
➡️ The bill establishes fines, suspension of operations, and potential license revocation for operators that fail to comply with the new requirements.
➡️ The proposal also includes the creation of a Permanent Working and Oversight Committee under the Provincial Chamber of Deputies, which would work alongside the Gambling comission, Lotteries, and Gambling Addiction Prevention, established in February 2026.
➡️ The bill has been referred to the Commission for Combating Illegal Gambling, a recently created body responsible for analyzing the proposal.
🎯 Next steps
Before the end of the year, the Gambling Commission plans additional measures to strengthen age verification through the national RENAPER registry, introduce further restrictions on gambling advertising at sporting events, and reinforce enforcement against illegal gambling platforms.
✍️ Context
Buenos Aires Province has a population of 17.5 million residents, of whom 9.5 million live below the poverty line. The province’s poverty rate is 3.3 percentage points higher than the national average.
