🏴☠️ Anti-fraud operations: Mastercard introduces a strategy to identify fraudulent merchants
Merchant Trust Services is a combined solution leveraging Mastercard’s capabilities in intelligence, cybersecurity, authentication, and analytics to distinguish legitimate merchants from high-risk operators.
➡️ Specifically for merchants, the network is introducing its Merchant Scam and Risk Indicator (MSRI), designed to provide issuers with so-called “merchant signals during authorization.” MSRI will first launch in Europe and the United States🇺🇸, with global expansion planned within the next year.
➡️ Context: according to data from the US Federal Trade Commission🇺🇸, consumers filed 3 million fraud reports last year, resulting in total losses of 15.9 billion USD. This exceeds the 2.6 million reports and 12 billion USD in losses recorded in 2024.
➡️ Important detail: starting in July of this year, Mastercard buyers and payment intermediaries will be required to investigate suspicious merchant activity within 72 hours once certain risk thresholds are reached. If fraudulent activity is confirmed, merchants will lose the ability to accept Mastercard payments.
